November 5, 2013 Meeting

Gather, knit and chat from 6 to 6:30 pm, meeting from 6:30 to 8:00. Show and Tell may be skipped this meeting as we have a full agenda. We meet at Sharon United Methodist Church, across from SouthPark Mall, commonly known as the “ski slope” church. The address is 4411 Sharon Road Charlotte, NC 28211.

Information on our charity knitting programs is below. We’ll be meeting representatives from both groups at the meeting and it would be great to have a nice set of finished items to present to them–make something if you are able.

Program: Bobbles, Popcorn and Nupps.

Learn about these three dimensional additions to your knitting.
If you want to try them out, bring some yarn (any weight from fingering to worsted) and appropriately sized needles.

Community Service:
Bring items to the monthly meetings and Chelsi Smith will collect and take to the designated organization.

The Charlotte Knitting Guild will be knitting or crocheting for two very exciting organizations this year:

The Cancer Resource Center at Carolinas Healthcare System’s Levine Cancer Institute (LCI), located on the main campus of Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The Cancer Resource Center’s goal is to deliver professional compassionate assistance to cancer patients, their caregivers, their families and the community. Resources include free wigs, hats and scarves, referrals to community and LCI services and programs, information on support groups, education, calendars of related events and computer access in the center.

Check out their link at or contact Barbara Myers, Resource Center Coordinator at 980-442-2000 or for more information.

Items needed:

Hats: small, medium and large seasonal hats are needed, cool summer yarns for spring and summer and warm soft yarns for fall and winter.

Scarves: all sizes

The Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster (LDHHS) is located in South Charlotte and is a new 10 bed facility for people at the end of life that cannot be cared for at home, but do not need or desire to be placed in a full scale medical facility. LDHHS opened this past January and needs extra help this year to meet the needs of its patients.

Woven, knitted and crocheted prayer shawls are given to each patient while they are at the house. These shawls are then passed on to the families as a remembrance in a special ceremony. The need is great! 4 dozen shawls a month have been needed.

Check out the website for Hospice at You can see the Levine & Dickson Huntersville House on the website which is Southminster’s sister house in Huntersville.

Items needed:

Prayer Shawls: Rectangular shawls sized 16-24 inches wide by 48-60 inches long. Fringe is fine, but not necessary (some residents prefer no fringe)

Colors: Local College colors like UNC Chapel Hill, DUKE, UNC Charlotte and NC State are often requested. Pink for breast cancer, Purple for pancreatic cancer and Alzheimer’s are also favorites or whatever inspires you!

Suzanne Smith, the volunteer donation coordinator from LDHHS and Barbara Myers from the Cancer Resource Center will be our featured speakers at the November meeting

Hope to see you at the meetings! If you would like to be removed from this list send a reply to me.
