Saturday, June 16 from Noon-3 PM
Open to all knitters, crocheters, and other fiber fans!
In earlier years, the Charlotte Knitting Guild has sponsored WWKIP Day events at local book stores or parks. This year, we want to get out in public in a big way.
Our plan is to travel to the Uptown area of Charlotte and gather in several spots before assembling at the Main branch of the Charlotte library for the last part of the day. Some of us plan to go for food and beverages after that event, but we haven’t any formal plans for that part of the day yet.
Here’s the schedule: Take the Lynx light rail (or your own favorite mode of transportation) and meet a Guild host at one of these spots uptown between noon and two o’clock (or pick your own spot).
- Mint Museum (get off the train at the Stonewall stop, then walk west up Stonewall)
- The Green (across from the Convention Center; you can get off the train either at Stonewall or the Convention Center stop)
- Wells Fargo Plaza (Convention Center stop, then go through the Hilton and Overstreet Mall to the Wells Fargo Atrium and out into the Plaza)
- Founders Hall (Time Warner Cable Arena stop, then find your way up 4th or 5th street to the Hall)
- Main library Auditorium (7th Street stop, then west two blocks)
Unfamiliar with these places? Here’s a Google Map showing their approximate locations:http://g.co/maps/s7ztp
We’ll be scattered all over uptown at times, and we thought we’d try something new (to us) to stay in touch. We’re planning to use the Twitter hashtag #wwkipCLT, so if you’re a mobile Twitter user you can follow our Guild account at https://twitter.com/#!/CLT_knitting or just search for the hashtag to see what other knitters are doing that day. We will probably try to post updates to our Facebook page as well.
Then join us at Main library (we’ll be in the basement) for the Grand Finale with prize drawings, swap table, and more from 2-3 PM. Bring something easy to knit on while you’re chatting, and consider whether you’d like to bring something to drink with you or buy something from one of the many nearby restaurants. If you want to take part in the swap, check through your stash and library for anything you’d like to part with! Someone might love to take home your unloved books, yarn, or old notions and equipment.
The Lynx (light rail) costs $1.75 each way (85 cents for seniors). There is free parking at stops from I-485/South Boulevard to Scaleybark. Several Guild members plan to leave the South Blvd. stop on either the 11:20 or 11:40 trips.
If you plan to drive, there is on-street parking around uptown, usually 25 cents for 15 minutes, up to 2 hours. Parking lots and garages will typically cost $5.
We’re hoping to do some “yarn graffiti” (aka ‘yarn bombing’) around the public areas, such as decorating railings, statues, and sign posts with bits of colorful knitting, and if you’d like participate, please bring swatches to the June Guild meeting. Rachel is still looking for guild members to serve as hosts at the different spots. You just need to show up early, put out a sign and greet knitters.
